The province of Pars (the land of Achaemenian kings Cyrus, Darius and Xerxes) with historic city of Shiraz as its capital plays an important role in the gas industry of Iran. Pars province is one of the richest provinces of Iran with respect to gas reserves, production, refining and gas transport routes. Currently 300 million cubic meters of gas per day (over 100 billion cubic meters per year or nearly fifty percent more than the gas consumption of the continent of Africa) passes within one hundred kilometers of Shiraz carrying gas to the North of Iran. This figure will reach 550 million cubic meters per day (nearly 200 billion cubic meters per year) by 2011. Narkangan Gas to Liquid International Company decided to build its first GTL plant near Shiraz due to availability of gas and existence of appropriate land within a short distance of the main gas pipeline. Shiraz GTL is located 65 kilometers from the city of Shiraz and 40 kilometers from its international airport.
The company’s activities and actions have led to a successful signing of a technology license with two major European technology providers as well as gas allocation for a 12,500 barrel per day Gas to Petroleum Product plant. Various local and national permits from authorized entities in the province of Fars as well as the Ministry of Petroleum have been secured for the successful development of this plant.
